Exhibit of the Day: the African elephants in the Hall of African Mammals! This exhibit features one (really, really) big family. Elephants live in herds led by the oldest female. Males drift between herds, but females form tight bonds and help raise each other’s young. While an elephant’s trunk might look like an oversized nose, it’s an incredibly nimble organ. African elephants have two “fingers” on the end of their trunk that let them grasp food and other objects—how “handy!” Photo: © AMNH
